TANE'S EXPEDITION: E-MOBILITY FOR A CAUSE ACROSS NZ
When Tane Tarlton embarked on an extraordinary mission to traverse the entirety of New Zealand on his e-scooter, aiming to raise $10,000 for Movember, little did he foresee the incredible support and camaraderie from the diverse e-scooter community.
In the days leading up to Movember, Tane conceived the idea of riding his e-scooter from Cape Reinga to Bluff, documenting his unique journey to raise awareness and funds for Movember.
Lacking a support vehicle, Tane leaned on the kindness of fellow e-scooter enthusiasts and the wider community. The response from the e-scooter community has been heartening, showcasing the unity and camaraderie among enthusiasts across the country. Tane reflects on the journey, saying, "I’ve connected with so many kind and generous members of the e-scooter community who have opened their homes, shared meals, provided shelter, and even helped charge up my scooter."
Among Tane’s memorable experiences so far is staying at a working sheep station in Marlborough, crossing Cook Strait to Picton courtesy of Bluebridge, and receiving assistance at a local e-scooter store that graciously ensured his scooter was in top condition for the continuation of his journey.
Adventure is ingrained in the Tarlton family, with Tane being the grandson of the legendary marine figure Kelly Tarlton. Tane’s life reflects this adventurous spirit, having worked on super-yachts and a marine conservation ship with Pete Bethune. In addition to his e-scootering skills, Tane is an avid surfer, scuba diver, free diver, and long-distance runner.
The impetus for this cross-country endeavor originated from a close friend who, during Tane’s adolescence, lost a parent to suicide. Tane shares, "Movember is a cause that deeply resonates with me. As a young male in New Zealand, I've witnessed the impact of suicide and mental health, motivating me to contribute positively. This e-scooter mission is my unique way of supporting the charity, raising awareness, fostering conversations, and spreading love along the way. This journey underscores the fact that there are countless incredible individuals out there willing to help if you have the courage to ask. It’s also a reminder that every journey is an adventure waiting to unfold."
With a growing number of followers tracking his progress on Instagram and donations pouring in on his Movember page, Tane's impactful message is evident. Having swiftly achieved his initial goal of $10,000, Tane decided to double it to $20,000, a target he is well on his way to reaching.
Tane’s expedition is not only inspiring but also a testament to the generosity of strangers within the e-scooter community and throughout New Zealand. It serves as a poignant reminder that our Kiwi spirit of community, kindness, and togetherness is alive and thriving. Tane's journey reinforces the profound difference that one individual can make when driven by a purpose. In a world where it's easy to feel insignificant, Tane is proving that, indeed, every electric scooter charge counts in making a substantial impact.
